Fake £1 coins! Should the authorities stop trying to deceive?
How to spot a fake pound coin, is the advice...just a little bit deceptive? They left out the part about you losing the value of it if you spot it in your change and don't pass it on....Personally, if I get passed one an obvious one I'll pass it straight back so I don't get lumbered with the loss.BUT If I spot one in my change and to get there it must be a reasonable fake I'll do what EVERYONE ELSE WILL DO Pretend I haven't seen it, and SPEND it As for EXAMINING my change, why the hell would I do that ?Incredibly they've made it illegal to pass it on AND you lose the value...but they haven't yet developed a technique to PROVE you knew it was phoney when you spent it. So SPEND it don't be a dumba55, is my view. The advice given seems to expect " Oh, I have to check my change to see whether it's ME that's going to bear a 1 loss....oh damn, it IS me. Bugger." What do YOU reckon? Thanks
Does anyone know the history of Danny Kaye estate Israel 5 lirot coins?
I am seeking information on a 1958 Israel 5 Lirot silver coin MS66 that my elderly mother purchased in 2005.I can find no information on this specific piece.According to the documentation, the coin is from the estate of Danny Kaye.Reportedly only 1000 coins were struck and only 363 have been certified graded and encapsulated by the PCGS.The coins were reportedly given to Danny Kaye by the Israel government as a reward for his work with Unicef. The coin is not a proof but reportedly struck on Proof dies with a higher quality than normal uncirculated coins.According to the documentation these coins were classed as MS65 to MS67 condition. The coin appears shinny but not perfect, denomination and Hebrew and Arabic writing on the front. To my eye, it appears to have polishing marks similar to those seen with a Dremel tool.A modern art menorah is embossed on the back. Both sides of the coin are concave. The coin is housed in a sealed plastic container with the following information printed on the label PCGS1958 MNRA 5 LIRMS66Israel 4272539From Danny Kaye EstateSpecimen Coin 364 363The question is how can there be 364 of 363 coins?I have uncovered a report that Danny Kaye found out there were an additional 20 coins available after he was given the original 363 lot. He acquired these additional 20 coins and added them to the 363 he was originally given. Thus creating a total of 383 coins. Apparently these were hidden away and discovered after his death. The estate gave permission to an organization to use his name in liquidating the coins. However I can find no authoritative statement confirming this report.I would really appreciate it if you could direct me to a source who may know something of this reportedly rare coin and assist me in appraising its value. Thanks in advance,
